Most people get very good results with sublimation: vivid colors, clear images, identical to those on the monitor. But if you are here, you have probably encountered a problem, and your image does not look as it should.

Sublimation is a process with many variables: printer, ink, paper, heat press, blank, parameters. When something goes wrong, it is easy to get lost. This guide helps you diagnose the problem quickly and gives you the exact solution.

💡 Tip before you start: identify the symptom, do not jump to conclusions. An image with a red tint can come from clogged heads or incorrect parameters, and the correct diagnosis saves materials.

Clogged printing heads (Nozzle)

#1 cause of incorrect colors and streaks

Symptoms:

  • The colors do not match those on the monitor (red, blue, or greenish tint)
  • Streaks appear on the printed image
  • The image has incomplete or uneven areas
❌ Nozzle Check with issues: missing lines Nozzle check with issues - missing lines
✓ Correct Nozzle Check: all lines complete Correct nozzle check - all lines

Here is what the effect looks like on the final product, direct comparison:

❌ Red tint caused by clogged heads Correct image vs image with a red tint
💡 Recommendation: Start every workday with a Print Nozzle Check. It takes 30 seconds and can save an entire batch of failed prints.
✅ Step-by-step solution
  1. From the printer panel, select Print Nozzle Check
  2. Compare the result with the correct pattern (all lines complete)
  3. If lines are missing, run Clean Nozzle / Head Cleaning
  4. Run Nozzle Check again to verify
  5. Repeat the cleaning 2–3 times if needed
2

Wrong or damp sublimation paper

Wrong type or wrong side = damaged print

Symptoms:

  • Blurry spots appear on the paper (like water droplets)
  • The ink migrates into the paper (blotting paper effect)
  • The final image is faded or has blurry edges
  • The ink passes through the paper and stains the platen
❌ Regular paper / wrong side Mug with paper on the wrong side - Wrong Side
✓ Correct print with sublimation paper Mug printed correctly with sublimation paper
⚠️ Important: Sublimation paper has 2 different sides! One special side (glossy, with ceramic powder) for transfer, and the other matte. Check the printer manual for the correct orientation.

How to store paper correctly

Sublimation paper is porous and absorbs moisture very quickly. It must be stored in airtight packaging, away from sources of moisture.

✅ How to save damp paper
  1. Place the sheet of paper on the heat press (without a T-shirt/blank)
  2. Set 180°C and press for 10 seconds at medium pressure
  3. Let the paper cool on a dry surface
  4. Use the paper immediately after drying
3

Incorrect parameters (time, temperature, pressure)

The 3 critical factors of any sublimation

Symptoms:

  • Temperature too high: brown to black tint, the image looks pixelated
  • Temperature too low: pale colors, white spots on the image
  • Time too short: incomplete transfer, faded colors
  • Incorrect pressure: uneven image, white areas
❌ Temperature too high: "Too Much Heat" Mug with temperature too high
✓ Correct parameters: vivid colors Mug with correct parameters
💡 Pro tip: Each blank has specific parameters. If you use Green Print products, follow our values. If you change your paper or ink supplier, the parameters may differ even for the same type of product.
✅ How to find the correct parameters
  1. Check the complete Green Print parameter list
  2. Start with the recommended values
  3. Do a test on 1 piece before the full run
  4. Adjust ±5°C or ±5 seconds if needed
  5. Write down the parameters that work for you
4

Wrong or mixed ink

An error that can damage the printer

Symptoms:

  • The ink does not transfer to the blank at all
  • The transfer is very weak or oddly colored
  • Print heads clog quickly
❌ Regular ink: yellow/incomplete colors Mug printed with regular ink
✓ Professional sublimation ink Mug with sublimation ink
⚠️ Maximum caution: Never mix normal ink with sublimation ink. Do not mix sublimation inks from different suppliers either, because the consistency differs and problems may occur.
✅ Rules for ink
  • Use only professional sublimation ink (we recommend Hongsam ink)
  • Do not change the ink brand without completely cleaning the CISS system
  • Reserve a printer exclusively for sublimation
  • Check the ink expiration date
5

You forgot to mirror the design

The #1 mistake beginners make

Symptoms:

  • The text comes out reversed on the final product
  • Images with logos appear reflected
  • The design is identical on screen, but reversed on the product

Sublimation works like a stamp: the design on the paper is applied in reverse onto the blank. That is why you need to mirror the image before printing.

⚠️ Exception: Transparent glass objects printed on the back side do NOT require mirroring. For all other products (mugs, plaques, T-shirts, puzzle pieces, keychains, etc.), always mirror.
✅ How to mirror the design
  • Canva: select all (Ctrl+A) → Flip → Flip horizontal
  • Photoshop: Image → Image Rotation → Flip Canvas Horizontal
  • Printer driver: check “Mirror" or “Flip Horizontal"
  • Check the text: the letters must be written backward on the paper
6

Staining of the press platen

Ink transfers to the blank through the platen

Symptoms:

  • Ink stains on the pressed blank
  • Marks/stains appear on the backs of T-shirts
  • The platen has colored areas from previous prints

When the press platen is dirty with ink, some of it transfers onto the next prints. Common with sublimation on textiles (polyester, cotton).

✅ How to protect the platen
  • Use a Teflon sheet on the platen; it is the ideal barrier
  • Alternatively: place a sheet of sublimation paper or normal paper
  • Clean the platen weekly with isopropyl alcohol
  • For T-shirts: place a sheet INSIDE the T-shirt as well (between the front and back)
7

Overload and electrical fluctuations

Presses consume a lot of power; pay attention to the electrical network

Symptoms:

  • Unstable temperature during pressing
  • Inconsistent results between identical prints
  • The press does not reach the set temperature
  • Reduces the lifespan of the press
✅ Rules for optimal operation
  1. Pause for 10 minutes every hour of operation
  2. Connect the press directly into the outlet, without an extension cord
  3. If you use an extension cord, DO NOT connect other power-consuming appliances
  4. Check the mains voltage (ideally stable 220V)
  5. Clean the press air filter monthly (if it has one)
8

Ink sliding at the end of pressing

Paper moves → double image (ghosting)

Symptoms:

  • Double image or shadow on the blank
  • The edges of the graphic appear “shifted”
  • Colors also transfer outside the design

After removal from the press, the paper must be peeled off immediately. Any movement of the paper on the still-hot blank causes the ink to “slide.”

⚠️ Myth to avoid: Some manufacturers recommend placing the product in water immediately after pressing. We DO NOT recommend this procedure; it can cause microfractures that reduce the product’s durability over time.
✅ Correct technique
  1. Open the press at the end of the time
  2. Use heat-insulating gloves
  3. Remove the product with the paper still attached
  4. Peel off the paper immediately, in one single motion
  5. Let the product cool naturally on a flat surface

💎 Pro tips from experts

Tips collected from the workshops with the best results:

🔬 Test before the batch

Always make 1 test print before a batch. 5 minutes lost on testing saves hours of work wasted on failed blanks.

📓 Keep a parameter log

Write down the combination that worked for each blank/material. In 6 months you will have your own sublimation “bible.”

🌡️ Invest in an IR thermometer

Check the actual temperature of the platen. Many displays show a ±10–15°C difference from the actual temperature.

📦 Store the paper correctly

Place the paper in an airtight bag with silica gel. Humidity is the biggest enemy of consistent results.

⏰ Use the printer daily

Print heads clog faster if you do not use the printer. If you do not have orders, run a Nozzle Check 2 times per week (at least)
